About Varina Rising Stars

4-H is an organization that helps youth in the development of self-esteem, self- respect, self reliance and community service.   We encourage youth in responsibility, leadership and life skills that will be with them their entire lives.

Our group is under the leadership of the Henrico Extension Office for 4-H which in turn is under the leadership of 4-H at Virginia Tech.

Varina Rising Stars 4-H has been in existence since 1985.  We are basically a horse and shooting sports group but have members that participate in other areas of 4-H.  We encourage all members to participate in county, district and state contests for public speaking, presentation, fashion revue, Hippology, horse & dog bowls, Fashion Review, and Share The Fun (talent show).

Our group puts on a horse show from March to November at Dorey Park on the second Saturday in each month.  We have donated $2000.00 from our horse shows  to the Free Spirit Rescue Shelter for horses.  We also have raised over $15,000.00 during the years for St. Judes Children’s Hospital with their Saddle Up program for trail rides.   Other community service projects we do are a Halloween spook walk and community party to encourage community people to have a safer Halloween;  help keep the bridle paths at Dorey Park clean; and collect items for children at St. Joseph’s Villa and pack them for Christmas stockings each Christmas (we average 150-200 stockings each year).  We are active in other community service projects with other groups when asked.  We take part in community activities such as the Big Toy Parade, Varina Day and run the State Fair Mini Show at the State Fair.

We meet the second Tuesday in each month at Dorey Park Recreation Center and we are open for youth from 9 to 19.  We have a cloverbud group which are up are coming 4-Hers from 5 to 8.  These buds are generally younger brothers & sisters of the older members.
